Frieze LA is coming to Santa Monica - Pacific Park® | Amusem*nt Park on the Santa Monica Pier (2024)

For the second year running, Santa Monica is set to host Los Angeles’ largest art fair, Frieze LA. Housed at Santa Monica Airport from February 29 to March 3, 2024, this influential global arts fair will feature more than 95 cutting-edge galleries from 21 different countries, plus an expansive program of installations, collaborations, and pop-ups from Los Angeles’ favorite restaurants.

But the action isn’t just happening at the airport. With Frieze-related and inspired arts events happening throughout Santa Monica, this is a great opportunity to explore Santa Monica’s greater arts and culture scene (and the typically lovely weather). We’ve compiled info and tips to help you enjoy not only Frieze LA, but all that Frieze Week in Santa Monica has to offer.

What is Frieze?

Frieze is a leading platform for modern and contemporary art, dedicated to artists, galleries, collectors, and art lovers. Frieze comprises three publications — Friezemagazine,Frieze Masters magazine, andFrieze Week — plus an arts and culture website, and a permanent gallery space in the heart of London (No. 9 Cork St.) Frieze also produces five international art fairs: Frieze London, Frieze New York, Frieze Seoul, Frieze Masters (held in London), and Frieze LA. The art fairs provide access to artists and artwork from around the globe.

Frieze LA

Frieze Los Angeles celebrates the dynamic culture of Los Angeles and its global contributions to the visual arts. The event is now in its fifth year, and its second year at Santa Monica airport — a 13 to 14-minute drive from Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. Positioned in the Southeast corner of the airfield and housed in a signature tent designed byKulapat Yantrasast’sarchitecturalstudioWHY, Frieze LA 2024 brings reimagined communal public spaces and a program of site-specific artworks, public activations, and sculpture across the Santa Monica Airport airfield.

In addition, Frieze LA’s Focussection — for galleries that have been operating for 12 years or less — has a new curator in Essence Harden from the California African American Museum. This year also brings an abundance of fresh galleries; half of them are operating in the Greater Los Angeles area and 13 of them will be showing at Frieze Los Angeles for the first time.

But, if you can’t get to the tent, you won’t miss out. Frieze Week always brings a wealth of special programming across our city.

Frieze Week in Greater LA

In celebration of Frieze Week, the city’s best-known museums are hosting special events and activations. 18th Street Arts Center

This beloved artist community, residency program and gallery has two Santa Monica locations: 1639 18th Street and 3026 Airport Avenue. Located just steps away from the Frieze tent, the Airport Campus at Santa Monica Airport is home to over 30 local artists’ day-work studios and two galleries.

During Frieze Week, you can catch Karla Diaz’s solo exhibition Wait ’til Your Mother Gets Home, which runs from February 17 to June 22 at the Propeller Gallery (Airport Campus). The exhibition features Diaz’s recent works on paper and canvas that focus on American Mexican identity from the 1970s to the present, emphasizing a cultural context of social upheaval and justice through her explorations of recollection and imagination.

L.A. Louver

One of Frieze LA’s official exhibiting galleries, L.A. Louver was founded in Venice, California in 1975. The gallery is committed to contemporary art through a distinguished exhibition program.

As well as participating in Frieze at the Santa Monica Airport, L.A. Louver is also presenting exhibitions at its original Venice Boulevard location. One of these exhibitions is Jojo Abot’s A God of Her Own Making — a multimedia experience consisting of sculpture, textiles, film, spatial sound, painting, and performance. The artist will lead a closing ceremony on Friday, March 1, coinciding with Frieze Week.
